15-19 YEAR OLDS IN EDUCATION

HOW MANY 15-19 YEAR OLDS ARE IN EDUCATION?

Not nearly enough is the answer

Comment

Just 71 per cent of 15 to 19 year-olds in the UK are enrolled in education. This compares to 86 per cent in France and 88 per cent in Germany. The Government is trying to tackle this problem through introducing the EMA, the September guarantee and the 14-to-19 reforms, including the introduction of the new Diploma, and have legislated in the most recent Education Act to raise the participation age. But it remains a depressing statistic and our competitors remain  well ahead of us on this  important measure. (Source Hansard 6 Jan 2010)
