TROOP SHORTAGES

Troop shortages

Sir –

Troop shortages (News, July 21) have three main causes: failure to recruit and retain sufficient men; the effect of the last defence review, resulting in a loss of 1,300 infantry and the evisceration of some of our finest regiments; and the reduced gap between operational tours, with the detrimental effect on soldiers’ work and family life.

This is mainly the fault of politicians who made strategic commitments without addressing the mismatch between commitments and resources.

There is an inverse relationship between the sacrifices required of our soldiers and the support they receive from those in authority.
